Here’s a new Knowledge Base article we published. This one talks about an issue where Ntbackup on Windows Server 2003 fails with "Error: The device reported an error to the request to write data to media".
=====
SymptomsConsider the following scenario:
· System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (SCVMM) is used to perform a physical to virtual conversion (P2V) of a Windows Server 2003 system.
· After the conversion completes, performing a backup using Ntbackup in the Windows Server 2003 virtual machine may fail with the following error:
Error: The device reported an error to the request to write data to media.
The NTbackup log file contains the following information:
Error: The device reported an error to the request to write data to media.
Error reported: Invalid command.
It must be a hardware problem or media.
Check the relevant errors in the system event log.
Operation has been completed.
Error: <Drive Letter>: is not a valid drive or have access to that drive.
After doing a P2V, the VM may have a partition size greater than the disk size as seen in MSinfo32 of the VM.
Resolution
To work around this issue, manually increase the size of the VHD to be larger than the partition size as displayed in the VM's MSinfo32 information.
To increase/expand the size of the VHD we can do the following:
Method 1: Using SCVMM 2008 R2
1: In the
SCVMM console
go to the
Properties
of the VM and then to the
Ha
r
dware Configuration tab
.
2: In the
left Pane
select the
vhd file
and in the main pane, check the box
Expand the virtual hard disk.
3: Put in the disk size, just enough to be bigger than the size of the partition that was seen in Msinfo32.
4: Click
OK
and wait till the job completes the change of the virtual machine properties.
Method 2: Using Hyper-V Manager In Hyper-V
1: In the
Hyper-V console
go to the
settings
of the VM, and select the
‘Hard Drive’
in the left pane.
2: In the Main pane under
Media
, click on
Edit
, this will open the
‘Edit Virtual Disk Wizard’
.
3: Select
Expand
and click
Next
.
4: Put in the disk size, just enough to be bigger than the size of the partition that was seen in Msinfo32. Then click
Finish
.
Please note:
Both the above methods work for both Dynamic and Fixed VHDs.
Both the above methods have to be performed with the VM turned off.
