With Update Rollup 6 for System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager (VMM 2012 R2 UR6), it's easier to discover and correct an issue that sometimes comes up when you're configuring Microsoft Azure Site Recovery (ASR) protection. The issue comes up when you want to add ASR protection for on-premises virtual machines and your virtual machine properties include the following:
· You don't specify the operating system version
or
· You don't indicate which disk contains the operating system for the virtual machine
These properties must be specified because they're required by Azure Site Recovery. For more information about the ASR requirements, see Prerequisites and support in the Azure Site Recovery Planning Guide.
How to use the improved E2A ASR protection
The improvement in VMM 2012 R2 UR6 is a clearer set of error messages that you can see in VMM in the Jobs pane if you try to configure a virtual machine that doesn't meet the requirements described in the previous section. Here is an example of one of the error messages:
If you receive this message or any similar message that ends with "the operating system version is not specified," open the virtual machine properties, click the General tab, and then for Operating system select the correct operating system. The following screenshot shows the properties of a virtual machine where Unknown needs to be changed to the correct operating system:
Similarly, if the Jobs pane displays a message that ends in “there is no disk marked 'Contains the operating system for the virtual machine’” then open the virtual machine properties and mark the disk that contains the operating system. The following screenshot shows the check box to select for the correct disk:
Before this change in VMM, you had to visit the ASR portal and check your virtual machines to make sure that they were successfully protected. Now you're notified right away if there's a correction you need to make to ensure that ASR can be enabled for your virtual machines.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager has its own VMM UserVoice site to handle feedback about VMM whether it’s an observed issue or a request for a new feature.
