How to recover an HoloLens 2 which is not responsive at all?

Copper Contributor

Hello, I've got some issues with my HoloLens2: I wanted to recover it, but it doesn't turn on properly, just the 4 out of 5 Leds on and nothing displayed. Then I tried the forced recover via PC with WDRT and Advanced recovery companion, but still my hololens2 cannot be detected. So how can I finally recover my HoloLens? And i also tried to power on with the volume up button pressed but it didn't work.

Thank you in advance

It sounds like you've already tried a few solid recovery steps. If your HoloLens 2 isn't being detected by the PC, here are a few additional things to check:

Try a different USB port or cable: Sometimes connection issues can be due to the cable or port you're using. Switching to another port or cable might help the PC recognize the device.

Make sure the device is fully charged: Even though the LEDs are on, a low battery could still prevent proper recovery. Try charging it for at least an hour and then retry the recovery process.

Use a different PC: If possible, try using another computer to run the Windows Device Recovery Tool (WDRT) and see if it can detect the HoloLens.

Have you checked the WDRT logs or any error codes during the process to see if they provide more insight? That could point you in the right direction.

Press and Hold the Power Button: Hold the power button for about 10 seconds. This should force the device to restart.
Wait for the Restart: After releasing the button, wait for the HoloLens to boot up again. This may take a minute.
2. Charge the Device
Connect to Power: Ensure that the device is charged by connecting it to a power source. Sometimes, the device may not respond if the battery is critically low.
Wait for a Few Minutes: Leave it connected for at least 10-15 minutes before trying to power it on again.
3. Check for Hardware Issues
Inspect for Damage: Check the device for any physical damage or debris around the power button or charging port that could affect functionality.
Use Different Charging Accessories: If possible, try using a different charger or cable to rule out issues with the power source.
4. Boot into Recovery Mode
If the device still isn’t responsive, you might need to attempt to access recovery options:

Hold the Volume Up and Power Buttons: While the device is off, hold both the volume up button and the power button simultaneously until the HoloLens logo appears.
Release the Buttons: Once the logo appears, release both buttons. This may bring you to the recovery screen.

To summarize: 1. Force Restart the Device: Press and Hold the Power Button: Hold for 10 seconds. Wait for Restart: Allow the HoloLens to reboot (may take a minute). 2. Charge the Device: Connect to Power: Make sure the device is charging. Wait for 10-15 Minutes: Before attempting to power it on again. 3. Check for Hardware Issues: Inspect for Damage: Look for physical damage, debris around buttons, or the charging port. Try Different Charging Accessories: Use a different charger or cable to ensure it's not a power supply issue. 4. Boot into Recovery Mode: Hold Volume Up + Power Buttons: Press and hold both buttons until the HoloLens logo appears. Release the Buttons: This should bring up the recovery screen, allowing you to troubleshoot further.

appreciate thanks for the information
