Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 for EDU licenses

Copper Contributor

Hi Everyone,
We have A3 and A5 students’ licenses for EDU, but these don’t include Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2. Is there any other license for education that includes this product, or these should be purchased alone for each student’s device?

Thanks

Hi @Nesma168,

Here’s a detailed explanation of your options for obtaining Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 for your students.

Licensing Options for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2

1. Standalone Purchase of Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2

The most straightforward option is to purchase Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 as a standalone license. This can be done for each student’s device, providing the full range of advanced threat protection features.

  • Standalone License:
    • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 can be purchased directly from Microsoft or through a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP).
    • This provides comprehensive endpoint detection and response (EDR) capabilities, advanced threat hunting, and more.

2. Microsoft 365 Education Licensing

Microsoft offers various bundles under the Microsoft 365 Education suite. While A3 and A5 licenses are comprehensive, they do not include Defender for Endpoint P2. However, there are options to upgrade or add-on:

  • Microsoft 365 A5 Security Add-on:
    • This add-on includes Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2.
    • It’s designed to enhance the security features of the A3 and A5 plans.
    • The A5 Security add-on includes additional security features like Microsoft Cloud App Security and Azure AD Premium P2.

3. Education-Specific Offers

Microsoft occasionally offers education-specific bundles and discounts. It is worthwhile to check with your Microsoft account representative or CSP for any ongoing promotions or bundles specifically designed for educational institutions.

4. Volume Licensing

For large-scale deployments, volume licensing agreements might offer cost benefits and easier management:

  • Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES):
    • EES agreements provide flexible licensing and pricing based on the number of full-time employees (FTEs) rather than the number of devices.
    • This could potentially include options to add Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2.

How to Proceed

  1. Contact Microsoft or a CSP:

    • Reach out to Microsoft directly or through your preferred Cloud Solution Provider to inquire about purchasing standalone licenses or exploring add-on options.
    • Discuss your specific needs and see if there are any educational discounts or promotions available.
  2. Evaluate Security Needs:

    • Assess your institution’s security requirements to determine if the full features of Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 are necessary for all devices or if a subset of devices would benefit most from the advanced features.

Conclusion

While the A3 and A5 licenses for EDU do not include Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2, you have options to obtain this through standalone purchases, security add-ons, or volume licensing agreements. By exploring these options, you can ensure that your institution benefits from the advanced security features offered by Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2.

I hope this helps! If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, feel free to ask.

Thanks for your response.

If we choose to proceed with Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) so we would purchase a licence per user, how many devices could each user use Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 on? Is it like O365 license where users could activate office products on 5 different devices?
