How does the licensing work?

Hi,
We are switching from Symantec to just use Defender since we are migrating to Office 365 and have Intune now. Upon some extensive searching, of Microsoft's horrible documentation, we had discovered the agility to purchase a standalone license for the Defender for Endpoint service, since we only need a M365 Business Premium license and not the full Enterprise tier.

To my point;

  • How does the defender for endpoint service use the licenses? In that security center all it adds is the computer, it didn't ask for the user assigned or show the owner, like Intune does.
  • It looks to me that we only need one license to setup the Defender for Endpoint center, then after it is no longer needed. Can we just use one license instead of purchasing company wide?

  • Also, does Intune auto-enroll with GPO, enroll the same computer multiple times in Intune? Like if I sign in and then someone else signs in, will it enroll twice?
