Over the last few years, we have invested heavily in Microsoft Graph to enable developers to access the rich data available in Microsoft 365. Microsoft Graph, along with OAuth 2.0, provides increased security and seamless integration with other Microsoft cloud services.
In August 2018, we announced that we were no longer going to actively invest in Exchange Web Services (EWS) APIs for Exchange Online. We also gave a strong recommendation to start migrating to Microsoft Graph for Exchange Online data access.
Today we are announcing the deprecation of the 25 least used APIs of EWS for Exchange Online (as determined by the call volume into the service). We are deprecating these APIs to begin the process of reducing the surface area of the EWS protocol for maintenance and security purposes. Support for these APIs will no longer exist after March 31, 2022.
The list of deprecated APIs is at the end of this post. We will introduce sunset headers in the response for these APIs that are marked for deprecation.
We have already sent Message Center posts to tenants using these low volume, and now deprecated APIs. If you did not already receive a Message Center post, you will not be impacted by this change.
Over time, we will identify additional APIs for deprecation when and where we see adequate parity with Microsoft Graph APIs. We are also working hard on addressing feature gaps and building parity between EWS and Microsoft Graph APIs. We strongly urge our ecosystem partners accessing Exchange Online data to migrate to Microsoft Graph APIs.
We previously announced that we planned to prevent registration of new apps in Azure with EWS permissions, but based on your feedback we have decided to postpone this plan for the time being.
EWS is a legacy API surface that has served us well, but no longer meets the security and manageability needs of modern app development. We strongly urge our ecosystem partners accessing Exchange Online data to migrate to Microsoft Graph APIs.
Thanks for the interest! We use PFs as email collaboration tool. Mails sent to the PFs contain information relevant to more than one department, and recipients are used to handle read/unread status on an individual basis. So the PFs are in some sense distribution groups with built-in archive functionality. Our issue with Shared Mailbox is the individual read/unread status. Besides technical considerations, some workflows are proven for 15+ years, so our colleagues are familiar and comfortable with the setup. Additionally we automatically process emails/attachments in the PF with EWS. (import in DB, calculations,…)
We are aware of Microsoft 365 Groups, but missed flexibility with subfolders and rules. We are also aware that additional functionality has been added to Groups, but we did not have time to evaluate these improvements.
Anyway, we’ve heard the signals and will reevaluate our PF workflows
We have contacts and contact lists that can be used in Outlook in order to send mails. Some of the contacts and contact lists (hundreds of contacts) should be accessable by only certain users. Therefore we have set permissions on those public folders. Only users that have the necessary roles can see and use the contacts and contact lists.
We use public folders because our consultants (MS partner) said it's the best way to do it. (even as we pointed out that public folders are deprecated)
Is there a way to implement our problem with some other APIs?
Yesterday the problem seemd to be solved but today we are facing the same problem (You have exceeded the available concurrent connections for your account) is back.
When our agency moved to Office 365 in 2014, there were no PFs... yet. Everything that was in a PF on-prem was converted to a shared mailbox, some with granular rights inside. Literally the day I finished the conversion, it was announced PFs were coming back. We left the content as shared mailboxes.
Since that time, we had a shared mailbox that we used for reported SPAM and other problematic e-mail. Unfortunately, it seemed to cause issues with Outlook performance when everyone tried to drop items into the mailbox, up to completely freezing the client. It was determined that a PF didn't seem to have the same experience so we created a PF to replace the mailbox (one folder instead of a whole mailbox object). That was back in 2016 if memory serves me correctly.
To this day, it is the only PF the agency has created and uses.
Glad it's back and working - but while we're at this, I'm curious how PF's are really being used by you all. Are you just backing up data users have put there? Or actually have apps using PFs for workflow in some way? Feel free to post here, or DM me. I'm genuinely interested to hear use cases.

We are deprecating these APIs to begin the process of reducing the surface area of the EWS protocol for maintenance and security purposes. Support for these APIs will no longer exist after March 31, 2022.

The list of deprecated APIs is at the end of this post. We will introduce sunset headers in the response for these APIs that are marked for deprecation.

We have already sent Message Center posts to tenants using these low volume, and now deprecated APIs. If you did not already receive a Message Center post, you will not be impacted by this change.

Thanks for the interest! We use PFs as email collaboration tool. Mails sent to the PFs contain information relevant to more than one department, and recipients are used to handle read/unread status on an individual basis. So the PFs are in some sense distribution groups with built-in archive functionality. Our issue with Shared Mailbox is the individual read/unread status. Besides technical considerations, some workflows are proven for 15+ years, so our colleagues are familiar and comfortable with the setup. Additionally we automatically process emails/attachments in the PF with EWS. (import in DB, calculations,…)
We are aware of Microsoft 365 Groups, but missed flexibility with subfolders and rules. We are also aware that additional functionality has been added to Groups, but we did not have time to evaluate these improvements.
Anyway, we’ve heard the signals and will reevaluate our PF workflows

We also had EWS connection problems with shared mailboxes. Today it seems to be solved and everything is working again without problems.

We use about 30,000 PFs, 3000 are mail enabled. Our main workflows reside in PFs.
Thousands of emails are automatically processed there every day via EWS.

We have contacts and contact lists that can be used in Outlook in order to send mails. Some of the contacts and contact lists (hundreds of contacts) should be accessable by only certain users. Therefore we have set permissions on those public folders. Only users that have the necessary roles can see and use the contacts and contact lists.
We use public folders because our consultants (MS partner) said it's the best way to do it. (even as we pointed out that public folders are deprecated)
Is there a way to implement our problem with some other APIs?
Yesterday the problem seemd to be solved but today we are facing the same problem (You have exceeded the available concurrent connections for your account) is back.

When our agency moved to Office 365 in 2014, there were no PFs... yet. Everything that was in a PF on-prem was converted to a shared mailbox, some with granular rights inside. Literally the day I finished the conversion, it was announced PFs were coming back. We left the content as shared mailboxes.
Since that time, we had a shared mailbox that we used for reported SPAM and other problematic e-mail. Unfortunately, it seemed to cause issues with Outlook performance when everyone tried to drop items into the mailbox, up to completely freezing the client. It was determined that a PF didn't seem to have the same experience so we created a PF to replace the mailbox (one folder instead of a whole mailbox object). That was back in 2016 if memory serves me correctly.
To this day, it is the only PF the agency has created and uses.
