how do i subtract the contents of a cell in one worksheet from a running total in another worksheet(Same Workbook)

  • You can subtract a value on another worksheet by including that worksheet’s name in the formula. For example, if the current total is in B2 on your summary sheet and the amount to subtract is in C5 on Sheet2, enter =B2-Sheet2!C5 in a separate result cell. If the sheet name contains spaces, use single quotes, as in =B2-'Expense Sheet'!C5. You can also type =, click the total cell, type the minus sign, then select the other sheet and its deduction cell before pressing Enter. Do not put a formula referencing B2 back into B2 itself, because that creates a circular reference. If your running total already has a formula, subtract the cross-sheet reference from that existing expression instead. These are examples; share the actual total formula and cell addresses if you need the precise version for your workbook.
