Migration to Azure does not assign licenses for Windows and SQL

Migration to Azure does not assign licenses for Windows and SQL.

We are using Azure Migrate to move workloads from On-Premise to our Azure subscription.

  1. The License type is not getting assigned to the Windows VMs automatically.

    • Do we need to update the License Type under Configuration tab under Virtual Machine to make sure the Windows VMs are licensed on Azure?

    • What happens to the MAK license which is applied at the OS level on the Windows VMs, do they need to be updated as well?

  2. The same is true for SQL Server. After registering the VM with SQL IaaS Extension, the SQL licensing gets configured with Azure Hybrid Benefit automatically by default. We do not have SQL License with SA and planning to use PAYG for SQL on Azure VMs.

The screen shot provided seems not talking about no license nor non-activated, can you share more detail to locate the issue?

Hi, These options refer to hybrid use rather than if the VM's have a license or not and that determines how you get charged for the licenses - please see https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/pricing/hybrid-benefit/#features

You can update it only if you have eligibility for hybrid use, otherwise you will get charged for licenses direct via your Azure bill.
