For global companies with offices that speak different languages and honor unique cultures, keeping everyone informed and united around the company mission is a huge undertaking. Employees are busy. Not all of them work in an office. It can be difficult for internal communications teams to consistently deliver content that is relevant to a diverse workforce. LumApps addresses this with a social intranet platform that provides a one-stop destination for employees to collaborate with co-workers, access productivity tools, and stay up-to-date on company news. By leveraging the Azure AD APIs through Microsoft Graph, we’ve simplified the experience for users and increased the productivity of our developers.
We use the Microsoft Graph API to access data across Office 365 and Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) through a single endpoint. This integration allows us to make Office 365 apps available through the LumApps platform. We also use identity capabilities to securely authenticate users to our platform and to deliver content based on the user’s permissions and membership in various groups. Accessing these services is faster because they are all packaged in one environment and well-documented. Token management is done out of the box, so our developers don’t have to integrate each app separately or implement several different authentication models.
We also use the identity services in Microsoft Graph to simplify work for users. Employees spend a lot of time switching between tools. They need to access email, productivity products, and document sharing sites. Hours can be wasted tracking down a new app or discovering which chat tool team members are using. Even if they know where everything is, moving between different apps is time consuming. Layered on this busy work are communications from headquarters. In the middle of a tough project, those communications are downgraded in priority---even though they could help reengage workers with the company and give more purpose to their day.
With LumApps, employees sign-in just once to the intranet at the start of their day and gain access to all the apps they need. Because it’s integrated with Azure AD, the permissions that have been defined for that employee can be leveraged within the LumApps experience. We use the Users and Groups API in Microsoft Graph to define the application rights, so that employees have access to the right apps, documents, and tools right from the dashboard. Systems for which the employee does not have permission aren’t displayed.
Administration is simple because we use delta queries in Microsoft Graph to synchronize user profiles and groups within Azure AD. With delta queries, our developers don’t have to handle the complexity of data synchronization and traffic between systems stays as low as possible. As employees’ positions, details, and group memberships change, data at our end automatically stays current.
Our integration with groups makes collaboration easier too. For example, employees might set up a group in Teams or a team site on SharePoint. Or they may create groups in Outlooks or Yammer. Using the Groups API in Microsoft Graph, we can automatically surface those groups in the LumApps chat functionality. Employees who are members of the group don’t have to take any action. Even if someone never opens Team, they can chat with a Team group in the LumApps dashboard.
A single dashboard for employee productivity and collaboration lets corporate communications build a company culture and keep employees informed. New apps and tools can be promoted on LumApps. Corporate Communications teams can also tailor messages to specific roles. Delivering messages in an employee’s dashboard alongside links to their favorite tools, makes them more likely to be read. When employees understand how they fit in, they are more engaged, which is better for them and the business.
