Marine transportation has a significant role in achieving climate goals. The industry has the power to create impact on the environment through decarbonization. With climate change, air pollution, and other environmental challenges, reducing vessel emission is becoming more urgent. So where are we in achieving zero-emission shipping? To answer this, we need to monitor vessel emissions on a global scale. Monitoring thousands of vessels is not easy. With lots of data involved, there needs to be a centralized platform where users can understand and explore vessel emission trends. For vessel and port operations, it is essential to have up-to-date data available to ease decision-making from timetable to routes. From an environmental policy standpoint, operators need to minimize or mitigate emissions from their operations. AVERA provides combined insights on both operations and emission data in a centralized dashboard.

How did AVERA come about?

The idea for AVERA came about during Climate Hackathon 2022. It was challenging to process lots of data given the limited time. Nevertheless, it was an accomplishment to be able to produce a prototype and be recognized in the hackathon.

How does it work?

AVERA is a prototype vessel emission monitoring system. It combines voyage emission data and vessel information to gain insights through an exploratory dashboard. With the platform, users have the ability to discover emission patterns per vessel type, route, time range, and other factors.

Data were parsed from blob files stored in azure and azure postgresql database. Processed data was saved into a new database and connected to PowerBI for visualization.

What’s next for AVERA?

AVERA is a potential solution that could help the maritime industry achieve zero-emission. Currently, it is able to process and visualize lots of data from vessels worldwide. AVERA can be extended to more functionalities:

  •       identify green ships and benchmark vessels
  •       optimize routes and timetables
  •       predict future emissions

Integrating AI technology will leverage the capability of AVERA to support sustainability efforts. The vision is to enable real-time analysis of vessel emissions and to make maritime data analytics become part of the business process.
