Seven steps for a successful Azure migration
Event Ended

Migrating an on-premises environment to Azure requires preparation, planning, and time. Let's discuss seven key steps for a successful Azure migration. First, we look at the Cloud Adoption Framework to get best practices for a landing zone, then we continue on our path to Azure Migrate to see how the service helps plan, deploy, and migrate our infrastructure to Azure. The integrated assessment analyzes the existing environment and recommends comparable Azure virtual machines (VMs), shows challenges and the expected costs. Last but not least, we take a quick look at the Azure Migrate and Modernize program to see how it can help support the migration journey.

Thank you for joining us this week for the Windows Server Summit! Q&A is now closed, but all sessions are available on demand so you can watch and learn when it is convenient for you. We hope you enjoyed the event.
- Thank you for the good and brief overview Gregor!
- Are there competent wizards to find Azure RBAC? This would be helpful to choose the right one from > 300 RBAC roles. Using owner / contributor is a bad approach but likely the same bad habit as "Domain Admins" or more on-premises, or Global Admins.
Hi Karl,
great questions and absolutely right, it can be a challenge to define a good and manageable authorization management for Azure. There are the Azure Governance Visualizer available (AzGovWiz) that gives good insights, but is more helpful from a governance perspective and shows already assigned permissions.
A tool that gives you a good recommendation, like I need these permissions, which role fits perfectly, I don't know yet, but I hope that Azure Copilot will contribute to that.
- Tony_PomboIron ContributorDoes there exist a "Cloud Exodus Framework"? I've worked with several companies whom move to Azure, and after sometime, decide it is not for them, and wish to move back on-prem.
Hi Tony,
I think there are several tools to stay on-prem and integrate the Azure tools with Azure Arc to enhance and optimize the current environment.
I have some customers who want to get more familiar with Azure and start using the hybrid capabilites.
Another good discussion point is the Antipatterns that are also available in CAF which addresses some of the challenges.- Tony_PomboIron ContributorThank you, but I am concerned with moving from the cloud to on-prem. There seem to be many tools available to migrate TO the cloud, but little/nothing for LEAVING the cloud. Are you aware of any "Azure Migration Tools" or documents for migrating the other direction?
- Olaf_EngelkeIron ContributorI hope you repeat this session in German language, your translated version is less than ideal. 😉
- I hope it still helps to get some good impressions. And yes, that would be possible 😉
