Microsoft Search, Ask Us Anything
Event details
Microsoft Search is a leading intelligent search solution available with Microsoft 365 that consolidates islands of information transforming information into knowledge and answers. Through innovative deep learning at scale, Microsoft Search harnesses the collective knowledge of your organization, extracting insights from structured and unstructured data, saving you time and money.
An AMA is a live text-based online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with Microsoft product experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.
Feel free to post your questions about Microsoft Search anytime in the comments below beforehand, if it fits your schedule or time zone better, though questions will not be answered until the live hour.

*** Need More *****
Our customers are interested to see the Query report of past 12 months. Also, like to view the reports by grouping based on specific columns (i.e, search query executed by Marketing department, users from same location, etc.)
- is there any API to extract query log for 12 months?
- is it possible to retrieve more columns in query report?
- WvStrienIron ContributorWhat are the requirements / conditions on external (to O365) administrations to have content crawled, and at query time the access permissions within external source system are applied / respected?

Are you currently using a platform / technology (ex. Graph connectors, Microsoft Federated Search Platform, etc.) for working with external / non-M365 content?- WvStrienIron ContributorQuestion is generic. As enterprise we have multitude of systems in which valuable information is contained. We plan to expose that to our end-users in transparent manner without require them in which system the information resides. As means via Microsoft Search, and the content be included in index via connectors: standard if available, build custom if not. But we need to ensure adherence to access permissions on the original information being crawled. What is required on a source system to have it crawlablem and on query time respect in the returned result set the permissions on original data.
- Charles GimonCopper ContributorWe have two high-level goals that we'd like to achieve. We'd like to give people short, succinct, targeted results directly related to the topic they're searching on. We'd also like to make sure that we index a broad, comprehensive range of materials (everything?) in order to support discovery, learning, cross-silo collaboration, and generally to take advantage of that big data set. People like short lists of results, but they don't want things to be left out. People like long lists of results, but they don't want to be overwhelmed. What's the best strategy for balancing these two approaches in the MS Search ecosystem, the narrow approach and the broad approach?
- Kathrine Hammervold
Microsoft
Microsoft Search will give you the full set of results, which is great for broad research. There is a related capability called Viva Topics which lets you curate smaller result sets for a given topic. These topics will be shown as search answers in Microsoft Search, so you will be able to combine the narrow and the broad approach.
- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorRelevance Tuning is an Important feature in the Enterprise Search, but MS Search is missing the Relevance Tuning. Please enable some kind of relevance tuning option for the IT Admins to handle keyword which need more relevance in search
- Dan MyhreIron ContributorThis is very important. And it can't just be at the org-level scope. Relevance within a hub and site level is critical to effective intranet searching.

Microsoft
Thanks for the feedback, Sandeep. Arbitrary relevance tuning is something that is top of mind for us. We need to find the right balance between sacrificing the needs of the individual for the good of the greater (arbitrary relevance tuning) versus automatic relevance tuning - which allows for greater personalization and contextualization. Today we offer answers in search to support promoting authoritative content in mainline results, longer term we'll continue to look at how to best balance both needs. An alternative is to leverage Azure Cognitive Search for manipulation of a result and pair with federation to render results in Microsoft Search endpoints.
- WvStrienIron ContributorWhat is the roadmap on extending “people find” with information from other systems in enterprise ecosystem; eg Workday profile?
- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorOption for IT Admins to modify/change the Out of the Box verticals/Result Types - Please provide an option for IT Admins to do modifications in the OOTB verticals like "All", "Sites", "Files" etc.. something like exclude "OneDrive" datasource from "Files" tab and changing the "Result Type" to custom so that we can have our own RT
- KasperLarsenIron Contributoryou should be able to change the query for the "All" and "Files" vertical , People is according to Mikael Svenson on the roadmap but no eta yet
- WvStrienIron ContributorWhat is the roadmap for presenting within Microsoft Search all relevant information on a topic, with that information sourced in multiple administrations: Office 365 and others (eg Workday, ServiceNow, custom systems crawled via custom build connector)

Microsoft
Hi William. Is the ask when results from remote data stores indexed via Graph connectors will be available in the 'All' vertical as opposed to their own dedicated verticals?- WvStrienIron ContributorHi Bill, what we’re striving for is a composite / helicopter view on most relevant content on a topic; without the end-user being aware from which systems it is sourced. Note: this likely also requires a consistent taxonomy applied to the (crawled) content in multiple source systems, to relate the information found within multiple systems and consolidate in a convenient overview.
- MElkinsAWBrass ContributorAlso use search pages where queries are passed in via URL. Very handy for integration with things like GIS. We also create links where we use one page for the search, but different links pass different parameters. This is tough with the page caching as the page thinks it's already loaded. This is a very necessary feature for us.
- IvanWilsonIron ContributorWe have added a random number as a querystring parameter to get around this caching issue. However, that assumes you have the ability to control the creation of the hyperlinks.
- MElkinsAWBrass ContributorThanks Ivan, can you provide more detail? We parameters in the query string (e.g., facility, asset name, etc.) but that doesn't get around the cache issue. There are times users need to hit the link twice to get it to load.
- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorIn our Org, we have an Intranet site where we have enabled Enterprise Search (Tenant Scope) with additional data sources Is there a way to get Search Analytics Information for one site collection. we are looking for information like "frequently asked keywords", "frequently asked users" etc..
- ericdixonCopper ContributorWe've been focusing on analytic and insight features at the M365 level. Expect "site" based analytics and logs to return soon.
- Allison BatesBrass ContributorSite collection insights are under Site Settings, Microsoft Search /_layouts/15/SiteAdmin.aspx#/
- Sandeep_GudivadaBrass ContributorThanks, unfortunately it shows an error "Data isn't available.Try again later." The site is used for Enterprise Search for more than 3 weeks now
- Erwin VerlindenBrass ContributorWhat are the options for semantic search and machine comprehension in MS Search or when it will become abailable?
- SanjayKulkarniBrass ContributorBased on the current plan, Semantic capabilities are planned to be released in calendar year 2023.
- Erwin VerlindenBrass ContributorAnd what about machine comprehension? It was said to become part of MS Search as well back in an article in 2018.
