MAC - online status check

can you check in MAC if a PC is switched on? In our networks often only a small part of the PCs is active. If I want to check the computers in their entirety with MAC (e.g. for failed updates), I have to check hundreds of PCs individually to determine whether they are online - this takes time until the connection timeout...
