Sounds like you're asking about an in-place upgrade. In-place upgrades are never recommended for a number of reason including corruption carry-forward. Best option is a clean installation, then migrate the roles or applications over to new instance.
That being said it is risky but possible to do by running setup.exe from the root of the installation media.
