In order to add network folders to the search index of a client computer, the network folder must be mapped and have a drive letter.
Unfortunately, that also means that every client will index the entire network folder, which generates quite a bit of traffic on the network and disk usage on the server. Depending on how many clients you have, that's not a good idea.
