Best practices needed - new DC, migrate mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to exchange online

Dear community,

one of my customers is running a DC on Windows 2010 and Exchange 2010.

(Pls don't make any comments why these old unsupported products are not migrated yet.)

My plan is to setup a new DC on Windows 2022, add all AD users on the new AD, connect it with Entra ID, purchase O365 subcriptions, assign licenses to each user, migrate the Exchange 2010 mailboxes to Exchange online. From my persepective this should work.

I just wanted to know, if this way is really best practice. If you have other recommendation please let me know. As we don't know how "the old stuff" is configured, we better don't want to touch or migrate it. Only the mailboxes from the old exchange 2010 should be in the cloud at the end.

Thanks for your recommendations.

    Hello,
Having both AD and Exchange on a single DC is not supported, and using a version as old as 2010 on top of that, means migrating these mailboxes may prove fairly difficult if not downright impossible.

Do you still need a on-premise domain controller anyway ? I would just populate a new Entra ID tenant with users, associate them with M365 licenses and be done with it.
For Exchange 2010 mailboxes, export them to a PST, and give it to an user or export them to an archive mailbox if it is possible.

If there is a huge technical debt, and you don't know its history, better start from scratch for everything.

Alban1998 Hi, don't worry, the old stuff, DC on Windows Server 2010 and Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2010, is running, on different machines.

A PST export is reasonable so we would have a fallback option if migration fails.

As the customer is a local adminstrative authority with diffent entities we should have a local DC for GPOs etc.

I am aware of the technical gap but reading through some documentation a hybrid setup of exchange 2010 should work.
