Automatic failover in an Availability Group only works when both replicas meet the requirements for synchronous commit and are fully healthy. If the secondary is in asynchronous mode, not synchronized, or showing any data‑movement lag, SQL Server won’t trigger an automatic failover. It’s also worth checking the AG health checks, the cluster quorum, and whether the Windows Failover Cluster is reporting the replica as ‘up’ and responsive. In most cases, once both replicas are in synchronous commit and the cluster sees them as healthy, automatic failover starts working as expected
