Architect Guidance on SQL Server vs SharePoint for Document Handling

I know the answer depends, but is there an architectural doc that helps a team weigh whether SQL Server with a custom Front end or SharePoint is a better choice over the other?

we have a team that could do it, but we need to evaluate against the Document Libraries with. SharePoint front end custom app.
