Skype for Business connecting with Skype

You are correct - the only way for a Skype for Business account to work with a Skype account is if the latter is tied to a Microsoft account.
Ultimately it comes down to what you want. You could schedule meetings with people using Skype for Business - then they can connect from their computer using only a browser.
Or use the Skype for Business account for everything other than field trips, and use a Skype account for the field trips.
As for using a Skype for Business account with Skype itself - that won't work as by default "business" accounts in Office 365 are blocked from signing up for a Microsoft account using the same email address.
