Subsites per Site Collection in SharePoint Online

In the SharePoint Online software boundaries and limits it's written, that you can only create 2'000 subsites per Site Collection in SharePoint Online:

Subsites: Recommended up to 2,000 subsites per site collection

Compared to OnPrem, where 2'000 subsites per site and a total of 250k sites per site collection are allowed.

Is this true? So we can't create a site hierarchie with more then 2'000 sites in a SharePoint Online site collection?

Thank you

David

I think that you may need to read that page a little bit closer. It is actually providing a recommended maximum number of subsites, it is not a hard limit, but something that should be consisered when designing a site collection.

If you exceed this recommendation you may start to see issues with some of the UI elements that need to display the list of subsites.

In general, SPO is optimized to scale by adding more site collections instead of adding more subsites.

    • Agree with Dean...indeed we could say that same software limits you can read for SharePoint 2013 / 2016 should be applicable to SPO...by the way do you think you need to create more than 2000 subsites under a site collection?

If Microsoft recommends a limit for SharePoint Online, then it's better to follow it. Otherwise you may have an unsupported situation. So an official statement would be very helpfull.

In my opinion, comparing several approches (like lots of Site Collections vs. lots of Sites) is an recurring task for a SharePoint Consultant :).

It says recommended. I think going to Online is a good oppertunitie to look at the current Architecture and Governance. It may be that site are not used or can be grouped under other Site Collections.
