Connect with the Microsoft Tech Community in places like meetup, eventbright, if you are a speaker apps like sessionize and Just Attend. There are a lot of people involved in the community (and you can search for them at mvp.microsoft.com by category and country/state) - there are also Microsoft Student Ambassadors and opportunities to mentor (which is a community contribution). Nominating is easy - showing up online for the past 12 months is the difficult part (and you have to document how and where you showed up!).
