Text Boxes in Template shared thru Assignments Tab in Teams can't be typed in

Microsoft Teams - Assignments Tab - Created an Assignment - uploaded Word Document that was formatted as a template using textboxes - Set the upload to "students edit their own copy" - students open the document and it won't let them type or do anything in the boxes. What is causing this? Can it be fixed? Thank you.
