Hiding or deleting standard user profile properties

Hi, I orignally posted this in the SharePoint group but I was informed this group may be more appropriate.  I couldn't find a way of sharing the orginal post so apologies for the double posting.

I am having some issues around user profiles in Office 365.  We want to hide some of the more personal properties from the profile page, such as birthday, interests etc.  I tried to modify the policy, visibility settings etc in the profile, but this did not make any difference i.e. the "add your birthday" option still showed up in the profile, as a last resort i thought I would delete the property, got the popup asking are you sure you want to delete the property, clicked ok, but the property still shows up in the list.

Does anybody know whether this the expected behaviour for Office 365/SharePoint Online, is this based on a timer job or is there another way of hiding/removing unwanted user profile properties?
