Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on AD Registered Devices

I found to use Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Windows 10 it needs to be AD Joined, if it is not will it still install but not get some functionality? Are there plans for a deployment model that is no AD Joined?

I am assessing my options for a model that personal accounts (Microsoft/Local) and this requirement adds too much complexity to manage.
