I installed MDE on my Android device, it didn't require inTune or a VPN. A lot of the information you can find with a simple web search is out of date AFAIK. I just installed the app from the Play store and then used my Azure AD credentials to join it to our tenant (we have E3 MDE license I think, FWIW). The device showed up in MDE, but I wasn't impressed. it doesn't collect telemetry, the only information in MDE is a note that the Android version is out of date. It might be getting some enhanced protection via Windows Defender, that was unclear.

OK, i see, it did create a VPn as outlined here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/topic/microsoft-defender-for-endpoint-and-your-privacy-on-android-and-ios-mobile-devices-4109bc54-8ec5-4433-9c33-d359b75ac22a
That article also explains what the app does for your Android device and what information will show in MDE console. Nice, that answers some of the questions I had.
