Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Exclusions - what works when?

The documentation from Microsoft is not very clear, and I find different answers on the web..... So I need the community's expertise - thanks.

Question:

• If I exclude "c:\Example\" is all subfolder and files also excluded?
• Is there any difference to the exclusions if I only exclude c:\example? (without \ at the end)
• And if I exclude c:\example\* is all subfolders excluded or ONLY files in folder c:\example
