Licensing MDE through Jamf?

Hi!

I am curious about the process of providing a MDE license through jamf. I am testing it on Mac devices currently.

I noticed there isn't any difference between when a license is assigned to the user's email in M365 vs when it is not assigned. Both of these situations result in Defender functioning on the Mac, and reporting to the central dashboard. I can't think of any logical way that m365 would link to Defender on Macs (it doesn't ask for a sign-in, and users are not linked to their m365 email). 

Can it be possible that a license is not required for MDE running on macs? or am I just missing something here? Does anyone have documentation on the licensing process through jamf?
