Defender for Endpoint P2 License question
Hello,
We have recently begun to use Defender for Endpoint and I have onboarded about 8 Devices Laptops and PC's. we decided to get a trial 10 licenses before we commit to a license per person in the company. I am a bit confused at what I get with this license as I have been able to onboard devices of users, I have not yet assigned a license to. I can still see and do everything I can with the ones that do have licenses. Is it only necessary to have one License for our whole company or does each user in fact need a license and what are they getting with the licenses? what does the license allow if as an admin I can see all the information I need and set up policies without assigning a license to an individual?

I’m trying to find you a direct answer that applies to this license, but I can say definitively that this behavior occurs with other licenses as well.
For example, I work with customers who only want to purchase Business Standard or Premium suites of licenses for their users, but they want the full security and compliance protections available with the E5 license. What we typically recommend is that 1 E5 license be purchased for the environment so we can get access to all those features, and then assign the rest of their users the business standard or premium licenses.
This gives us, the MSP, the ability to put in place all of the security and compliance features we need to protect the customer, without the customer having to spend a ton of money since the singular E5 unlocks those capabilities by simply existing in the environment.
At best guess right now, having just one defender for endpoint p2 is unlocking all the features you’re describing to detect these devices, onboard them, and apply policies. But the per user subscription is likely necessary for other features of the license, the the maximum number of registered devices or something.
Here’s a nice table comparing P1 and P2. Hope this helps!

- James_AgombarBrass ContributorHi, each user will need either the P1 or P2 Defender for Endpoint licence.
Here’s some info on the features, but I’d highly recommend the P2.

Do you have licensing for Intune to manage the devices too?- LDC_incCopper Contributor
James_Agombar Hello thank you for your response. It appears we are getting all the defender abilities for multiple devices without giving each user a license. I’m inclined to continue onboarding without providing the licenses as it is not needed as of now. I have 15 devices right now with only 4 licenses assigned and different users on each device.
no I am currently not using Intune, however it would be a nice upgrade as I want to be able to apply updates programs and what without having to jump on CMD back door with defender. I am looking into it though thanks.
