Can't Access Defender Because I Haven't Activated Defender

Company portal tells me I need to install and activate MS Defender. I've installed it, but when I open Defender and sign in, it just tells me I need to "Install and activate Microsoft Defender for Endpoint to protect your devices," which is exactly what the company portal tells me and doesn't help me at all.

I've tried clearing the app cache and data and restarting the device, but it doesn't change anything. I think it's not considered active because I haven't granted it all the required permissions, but I'm not sure what it's missing without the walkthrough that defender is supposed to give me for adding all perms. I've added a few of the ones it needs manually (file access, display over other apps, notifications), but that hasn't fixed the issue. I believe there's some VM setup required, which I haven't been able to do manually.

Tried asking on the Microsoft Community but was redirected here.

  • This is what the learn documentstion says:

(I remember it took us some time, tofether with the solution architect and the documentation we got it working.)

    Enable on a subscription

Defender for Endpoint integration is enabled by default when you enable a Defender for Servers plan. If you turn off the Defender for Endpoint integration on a subscription, you can turn it on again manually when necessary using these instructions.

In Defender for Cloud, select Environment settings and select the subscription containing the machines on which you want to deploy the Defender for Endpoint integration.

In Settings and monitoring > Endpoint protection, toggle the Status column settings to On.

Screenshot of Status toggle that enables Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

Select Continue and Save to save your settings.

The Defender for Endpoint sensor is deployed to all Windows and Linux machines in the selected subscription.

Onboarding might take up to an hour. On Linux machines, Defender for Cloud detects any previous Defender for Endpoint installations and reconfigures them to integrate with Defender for Cloud.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/defender-for-cloud/enable-defender-for-endpoint

Just to clarify, this is for the Android mobile version of Defender for Endpoint, which I was prompted to install by the Company Portal when attempting to enroll my phone. Apologies for not specifying!

These instructions don't appear to apply to the mobile app. Please let me know if you can help me troubleshoot the mobile app/if there's somewhere else I should ask these questions!
