Microsoft Backup
Thank you for your replies, in summary
The ‘soft’ delete could be used to recover a group that was deleted in error, retained for 30 days. In addition, Microsoft also take a daily backup of a group which is retained for 14 days, in line with SPO?

Please correct me if the SLAs have changed but I believe the daily SPO backup occurs every 12 hours and is held for 14 days. Saying this, there are limitations on the granularity of the backup. Focusing on SharePoint Online there is a lack of ability to restore a single item or list/library - what I find gets deleted most commonly by End Users. Also lacks the ability to remove the items from SharePoint but bring them back at a later time if required controlling sprawl.
With Exchange, I believe items can be restored but I believe there was some limitations around Folders.
If any of this is a concern of yours Paul, flick me a pm and I can point you in the right direction.
- Jun 27, 2017Daily backup is for SPO Sites not for entire Groups as explained by Tom...Tom, you are correct: the SLA has not changed.

Thank you for your replies.
The SPO backup is not an issue as we have deployed a 3rd party backup solution that provides the ability to restore a single item or list/library.
However, this service can not currently be extended to cover groups. I assume if a group member empties the 'group' recycle bin, the item is not recoverable?
