Hi!
The simple answer is that modern sharepoint works in a flat structure! An office 365 group provisions a Team site in SP and that site can be teamified! Sub sites can’t. You simply need to create new groups/team sites or teams directly - all of them ending up creating an Office 365 group

adam deltinger Thanks! I was kind-of thinking that might be the answer.
With that in mind, can tell me of resource to understand how to wholesale move my sub-sites to the newly-created "top level" sites. (Each of the 12 client sub-sites have customized document libraries, homepage layouts with web parts, etc., which will be so time-consuming to re-create.) I tried searching for a resource on this site and can't find it. I assume moving a site and all of its contents has gotta be a pretty regular activity, but I can't find a clear-cut guide out there..
