Multi Region Azure Set up and integration

We have multi region(One in South central US and other in Australia) Azure set up and I have below questions

1. Is it possible to enable VNET peering between regions and enable data transfer?

2. Or is it better to have global peering and enable data transfer?

Any idea on data transfer costs ?

Azure ExpressRoute lets you create private connections between Azure datacenters and infrastructure on premises or in a colocation facility. ExpressRoute connections don't go over the public Internet, and offer higher security, reliability, and speeds with lower latencies than typical connections over the Internet. ExpressRoute can also be designed for high availability to provide carrier grade private network connectivity.
