Power BI and Fabric team ownership in extended engineering models
When an internal BI team already owns Power BI and additional engineers support Fabric development, how do you divide responsibilities?
For example, should the extended team own data pipelines and notebooks while the internal team owns semantic models and reports, or is it cleaner to assign ownership by project? We have encountered this at Datatobiz when implementation work moves into ongoing development and support. Thoughts?

Your internal BI team owns Power BI, while engineers build Fabric components and may later support them. I would separate technical contribution from accountable ownership: assigning a pipeline to an external engineer does not automatically make that person its long-term operational owner. Microsoft’s managed self-service model separates centrally managed data assets from downstream reporting, but it is not a mandatory organizational chart. For your situation, document owners for ingestion, notebooks, data quality, semantic models, reports, security, deployment, and incident response. Give each project one accountable service owner, while assigning specialist responsibilities by component. Define handover criteria before implementation ends, including source control, runbooks, monitoring, access, refresh dependencies, and named backup contacts. Decide who approves schema changes affecting semantic models and who handles production failures across that boundary. Use component ownership for reusable platform assets and project accountability for end-to-end delivery; the best split depends on skills and support commitments.
