Favorite Tip to Share with End Users

One of my favorite parts of adoption work is preparing tips and tricks for end users to make their lives just a little bit easier! My personal favorite tip to share is that in Teams you can set your documents to open by default in the app. By clicking the ... next to your profile, settings, files and links, and switching to default. I am excited for when this becomes available in New Teams!

Do you guys have any favorite tips and tricks you like to share with end users to drive adoption?

  • My favorite tip is to use CTRL + F to start "find in channel/chat". It basically searches within the context of a Teams channel or chat.

I always remember some additional tips as I am discussing applications with others, but hopefully this is a decent start for others.

    Outlook:

    • Dragging a message to Tasks, Calendar, etc copies the information from that email into a new item of that type.
    • CTRL+Enter clicks the send button and ESC closes the email/object you have open.

    Excel:

    • CTRL+~ toggles between showing you the end result of all formulas and the formula itself, which is great for proofing formulas in case you messed them up.
    • CTRL+A selects the whole table or if you are on a cell outside of a table then the whole sheet.
    • Selecting multiple worksheets using SHIFT or CTRL allows you to group them.  When you type, resize, and do many things it will do it across all of the sheets.  This is great when you are setting up a template with many different tabs.

    Teams:

    • CTRL+the scroll wheel on the mouse increases the size of shared content and also increases the size of the text for desktop icons, Word, Edge and many other application's zoom settings.
    • Holding CTRL+Spacebar down allows you to selectively leave your mic unmuted while you keep those keys held down.
    • CTRL+SHIFT+M mutes or unmutes your MIC.

The one that I have shown people for YEARS when the move to OneDrive or SharePoint Online is the ability to @ mention people in comments and that it will automatically share the file with them and notify them of the comment. The wows I get when I show that to people is amazing.

So many tips! In my current public sector project we introduced M365 across an organization that has a wide variety of roles and technical abilities. We created a long list of practical tips ranging from the very basics to advanced. These are posted on our team and we give the link (always being added to) to Corp Comm and they pick random tips as filler for the employee intranet and newsletter. Things like how to schedule delivery of a chat message, how to sync files, how to create a vacation calendar in Teams are all scenario based that make it real for people and get the newbies to take baby steps.

jamielwatson two of my favourites in Windows are the Snipping Tool (Win + Shift + S) and the Clipboard history (Win +V). Other than the good ol' copy/paste, those are my most used keyboard shortcuts.
