Issues with AutoSave and Sensitivity Labels – Need Advice on Best Practices
Just to clarify, those files are not stored in the cloud? IIRC autosave and co-authoring is only supported for labeled/encrypted files stored in SPO/ODFB, but Tony Redmond keeps a better track of the compliance features, so he can correct me.

I have same issue - if a file does not have sensitivity label - AutoSave works for SPO/OD files (cloud).As soon as a label is applied - the AutoSave stops and equally if label is removed - AutoSave feature starts working again.
From above, I did not understand what the fix is to have labels and keep AutoSave on as well?Would you elaborate, please?
