What is the point of Following an account in Microsoft Tech Community?

There are Following and Followers tab in everyone's profile page. I myself am following some people and some people are following me. but I don't know what it's used for and what's the point of it.

I normally expected it to show me notifications when the person I'm following does something in Microsoft Tech Community, such as creating a new post or making a new comment, but that's not the case.

by the way, I also checked my notification settings:

there is no mention of the word "follow" in there.
