Latest conversations vs post under what you want to discuss

I am confused by the latest conversations listed on the right hand side on these pages vs the post listed under what you want to discuss (group/section homepage).

It is tiring enough to acutally drill down (scroll endlessly) to new and interesting content, why are these sometimes the same, sometimes not and what drives these?
