Building BuildingCalc: A Client-Side PWA Engine for Construction & Civil Estimations

Hi Microsoft Tech Community,

I wanted to introduce a project I have been developing called BuildingCalc (https://buildingcalc.net) and share a bit about the technical architecture behind it.

As a full-stack developer working on web tools, one of my primary goals was to solve the speed and privacy friction found in traditional civil engineering and construction estimation software. Most existing tools rely on heavy backend server processing, forced user account sign-ups, or slow, ad-cluttered pages.

To overcome this, I architected BuildingCalc as a 100% client-side Progressive Web App (PWA).

Key Architecture and Performance Highlights:

- Zero Backend Latency (100% Local Execution): Every mathematical formula—from concrete volume mixes, rebar weight calculations, and brickwork masonry to electrical wire sizing, HVAC sizing, roofing pitch, and flooring coverage—executes entirely inside browser memory (V8 JavaScript engine).

- Privacy-First Design: Calculations stay local on the client device with zero server telemetry or logging, making it compliant with strict privacy frameworks like GDPR.

- Offline-First Capabilities: Built as a Progressive Web App (PWA) with service worker caching, allowing civil engineers, quantity surveyors, and contractors to use it on active job sites even with spotty connectivity.

- Instant Export Suite: Built-in PDF report generation and Excel spreadsheet export capabilities so users can create clean material takeoff lists directly for client quotes.

Core Suite Coverage:

We have modularized over 45 specialized calculators into dedicated categories:

1. Concrete and Foundation: Slab volume, footing concrete mix ratio (M15, M20, M25), ready-mix quantity surveying.

2. Masonry and Structural: Brickwork mortar estimation, block wall counts, plastering mortar mix ratios.

3. Finishes and Interior: Tile coverage with grout offset, wall paint estimation, ceiling sheet requirements.

4. MEP and Utilities: Electrical load sizing, pipe flow sizing, roofing material pitch calculations, and site excavation earthwork.

I would love to connect with fellow software engineers, web architects, and community members working on PWAs, edge architectures, or civil tech solutions. Feel free to explore the suite at https://buildingcalc.net and let me know your thoughts or feedback!
