Is there any capability for Microsoft Purview to interact with external items?
Any items you ingest in this manner is available for eDiscovery/Content search and is also subject to any retention policies configured. As the data is usually ingested in non-user-accessible locations, DLP and sensitivity labels are an afterthought, though they are also supported. Here's a sample article walking you over the eDiscovery process for external items: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/use-content-search-to-search-third-party-data-that-was-imported

Thanks, just to confirm, is it the "externalItem" object itself that is subject to retention policy, not the actual source document?
Could you possibly expand on what you mean by DLP and sensitivity labels being an afterthought? Do you just mean that DLPs and sensitivty labels could be applied on the source documents?

Such items are ingested into M365 mailboxes and thus will be subject to any retention policy assigned to said mailboxes. The original/source item is not affected, if that's what you mean.
And since those items reside in part of the mailbox that is not user accessible, they cannot be shared, hence no concern for DLP. Technically they can still be processed by each compliance control, DLP and sensitivity labels included, but you need to use "low level" tools for that. Outlook and other email clients will not expose them.
