Windows Server and SQL server license conversion on Azure
Hi
I would like to know Windows Server and SQL server license conversion on Azure.
I plan to migrate on-premises Windows Server including SQL server to Azure using Veeam Backup and Replication.
*I will conduct backup the server and restore to Azure Virtual Machine using Veeam Backup and Replication.
On on-premises site, I am using Volume license without SA, so I am considering convert license on Azure.
My question is bellow license combination is supported and can I change Volume license.
- Windows Server License BYOL(with SA) + SQL Server License BYOL(with SA)
- Windows Server License BYOL(with SA) + SQL Server License Pay-as-you-go
- Windows Server License Pay-as-you-go + SQL Server License BYOL(with SA)
- Windows Server License Pay-as-you-go + SQL Server License Pay-as-you-go
Also I would like to know how to change License type on Azure.
Best regards.

When it comes to licensing Windows Server and SQL Server on Azure, there are a few options available depending on your needs. Here are the license combinations that are supported:
- Windows Server License BYOL (with SA) + SQL Server License BYOL (with SA)
- Windows Server License BYOL (with SA) + SQL Server License Pay-as-you-go
- Windows Server License Pay-as-you-go + SQL Server License BYOL (with SA)
- Windows Server License Pay-as-you-go + SQL Server License Pay-as-you-go
To change the license type on Azure, you will need to follow these steps:
- Log in to the Azure portal
- Navigate to the virtual machine that you want to change the license type for
- Select "Configuration" from the left-hand menu
- Under "Settings", select "Licenses"
- Choose the license type that you want to change to and follow the prompts to complete the change
My personal Preference is:
- Windows Server License Pay-as-you-go + SQL Server License Pay-as-you-go
It's important to note that converting your licenses to Azure can be a complex process, and it's recommended that you consult with a licensing expert to ensure that you are in compliance with licensing requirements.
