Synapse DW - Replicated Distribution

I am trying to work out the benefit of using replication on a Synapse DW table. Its seems to have changed where you don't get an extra compute node unless you are on DW1000 or higher. So a replicated table would not have any benefit in any of the tiers below DW1000 as the data is copied across the Compute Nodes and not the distributions?
