Monitoring Azure Policy Compliance using Defender for Cloud Recommendations

I want to believe there is a unified way to track the compliance states of resources across the Azure environment. Will defender for cloud recommendations and alerts 100 percent alert on resources that are non-compliant based on assigned built-in and custom policies? It seems duplicitous to chase down non-compliant resources using a policy approach and defender recommendations/alerts. Any thoughts on this or best practice?
