Error disabling protection on VMWare VM

I'm trying to move some VMWare machines to a new infrastructure server, but I'm not able to disable protection on them in the Azure portal. The job grinds along for a couple of hours and then errors out with Error ID 78143 and no further information. Is there any way to force removal of protection manually so I can get these machines moved?
