Based on previous experience, allowing our product to be installed via downloads significantly increases the ease and probability that the product will be copied and distributed thru undesirable channels and significantly complicates the processes we need to make updates, add features and support our community of users. To the average user downloads are a scarier process, how many times has the computing world emphasized that downloads can be harmful. The psychological advantage of the MSIX installer and its ease of use is was a huge bonus to the indie developer. The world at large has no idea what "signed code" is or means, so the level of trust required to try something increases significantly. Don't believe, me http://nowheretogofromhere.com
Getting somewhat cynical about the motivation for not solving this issue I believe there is a strong desire on Microsoft's part to drive applications into the MS Store where there are profits to be made. The new MS store has a way of monetizing some applications without interaction with the MS commerce engine which we are now looking into to see how difficult it will be to manage and whether or not we can deliver the product in the manner we originally intended.
BTW: the link above, if it gets published, goes nowhere but I will bet most do not even try or for certain hesitated before they did.
