I've been playing around with Viva Topics the past month (our 30 day trial). Here's what I'm finding:
- It takes the AI at least 2-3 weeks to recommend topics. If you create a new topic, it takes 2-3 weeks to start making good recommendations. This is a bummer given that the trial is only 30 days.
- The scope of what the AI crawls is limited to SharePoint. I understand that the ability to add external repositories is coming. I'm not sure if there's additional cost associated...
- Linking is limited to specific file types and only things in SharePoint. I can't link to external web pages, videos, etc. I can't link to Stream videos and I just figured out that PNGs are out too.
- All of the demos and screenshots of Viva Topics shows MS Teams integration. The Q&A feature of Viva Topics is severely limited without this integration. Basically you put in a comment on the page and the pinned people are notified of the question. Nothing like what I've seen described in the Viva Topics demos or videos. There's nothing specific on the roadmap about Teams integration or an app for Teams that I can find. When is the Q&A functionality going to work like in the demos?
It has lots of promise and I'm cautiously optimistic that it's going to get better. As it stands now, $5/user/mo is pretty steep for something that has limited functionality.
