It gives the end-user a quick and faster overview via the Dashboard, rest of the Viva applications and News. I've implemented it for several clients anywhere from 300 people to 15 000. And it's been a surprising success so far, and the feedback has been that it's worked amazingly well, especially for front-line workers and workers on the go as it's alot more mobile friendly, especially the dashboard.
And the intranet is just on click away, yes it is an extra click but it's there. But I do agree it doe take away from the Portal/intranet landing page.
