In an effort to expedite bringing updates to our customers, our update rollups follow quarterly release cycles. This helps us deliver the required features at a faster pace and also allows us to hear regular feedback from customers. Update Rollup 4 (UR4) for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager (DPM 2012 R2) was recently released and this article explains the enhancements done in DPM with regards to this update.

1. Protect SQL Server 2014 using DPM 2012 R2

With Update Rollup 4, DPM is the only Enterprise backup product in the market to protect SQL Server 2014, including AlwaysOn configuration, emphasizing that DPM is the best of the breed to protect Microsoft workloads.

Existing users of DPM will be delighted to know that there is no change in the user experience or SQL Server protection and recovery scenarios supported. Thus users can continue to backup SQL Server 2014 using DPM in the same way that they were protecting older SQL Server versions. For more details on protecting SQL 2014 using DPM please refer to Protect SQL Server 2014 using DPM 2012 R2

2. Simplified experience: Register DPM server for online protection with vault credentials

The experience of registering the server-to-be-protected with the Azure backup vault is simplified and greatly enhanced in the recent updates to Azure Backup. Prior to this update, users had to generate certificates and upload the certificate to Portal. Now users will download vault credentials from the portal and use it during registration.

System Center Data Protection Manager leverages Azure Backup to protect data to Azure. A vault credential file is now the recommended way to register DPM server with an Azure Backup vault. This functionality is enabled in DPM with Update Rollup 4 (UR4) . Registration of DPM servers running UR3 or older is supported through certificates for backward compatibility.

3. Support for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2

Support for protecting SQL Server 2012 SP2 is provided with this update. In addition, SQL Server 2012 SP2 can also be used as the DPM configuration database.

4. Reliability fixes for DPM

There are also a few reliability fixes for DPM UI crash and protection for SQL server etc. For detailed list of all enhancements please refer to the following Knowledge Base article:
