Many organizations find it useful to keep an archive of all IM conversations that their users take part in; other organizations are legally required to keep such an archive. Some organizations that archive keep an archive of web conferencing content, too. Lync Server Archiving Server supports these goals, and provides an improved user and administrative experience that is the result of changes to the archiving infrastructure and the way archiving is managed.
Monitoring has also gotten easier. In Lync Server, you have access to more than 40 ready-made reports in Monitoring Server Reports, a web-based tool that provides detailed information about system usage, user activity, call reliability, and media quality. In addition, there are new synthetic transactions for testing and validating workloads and performance counters for capacity planning and troubleshooting performance issues.
Summary
The Archiving Server and Monitoring Server server roles support reliable archiving and proactive troubleshooting by providing detailed data capturing and reporting capabilities. This chapter describes these capabilities and the improvements you will find in this release of Lync Server.
