For more than 30 years, Microsoft Certifications have provided proof of world-class technical proficiency. We are focusing on innovative solutions that improve the accessibility and real-world relevance of our certifications. I am pleased to announce that we are adding a powerful new resource designed to help with all role-based (associate, expert, and specialty) certification exams. On August 22, we will begin updating our exams so that you will be able to access Microsoft Learn as you complete your exam. This resource will be available in all role-based and specialty exams in all languages by mid-September.

How often do you say in your daily life, “I’ll just look that up.”? Now, you can… with easy access to Microsoft Learn, another enhancement that we have made to improve the overall exam experience.

Because this is an exam resource, much like a calculator, exam time will not be extended. We are not changing the way we write our questions; they will continue to focus on problems or scenarios that require real world experience to solve. As a result, this resource is intended to be used for those questions that describe problems where you may need to look something up on Microsoft Learn. It is not something you should be leveraging to answer every question.

Here's what you need to know about this new resource:

  • You will have access to everything in the learn.microsoft.com domain except Q&A and your profile.
  • Extra time will not be added.
  • The exam timer will continue as you search Learn for whatever information you need.
  • This resource is only available on role-based exams, not fundamentals.
  • This resource will be available in the same languages in which the exam is available.

To use this resource during your exam, you will select the Microsoft Learn button available on the exam question screen. This will open Microsoft Learn in a split screen to the right of the exam question. You can then navigate through the website as you normally would and expand it to full screen if you prefer. Below are a series of screenshots showing the experience.

To open Microsoft Learn, select the icon on the question screen. In this example, it’s below the question.

After selecting the icon, Microsoft Learn will open in a split screen to the home page.

You can launch multiple tabs of the Microsoft Learn website and navigate to different portions of the site, except the Q&A section and to your personal profile (you won’t be able to login). These tabs can also be individually closed.

You can adjust how much of the screen shows the question and how much shows Microsoft Learn with a splitter between each window.

You can open Microsoft Learn into full screen. Full screen mode includes the test timer and question count information in the header.

Web Browsing is restricted to the Microsoft Learn domain. While the Microsoft Learn site includes links to other webpages, such as GitHub, attempts to navigate to other web domains will prompt a message in the test window indicating the site is blocked.

Microsoft is committed to improving the overall exam experience to ensure that everyone who wants to take a Microsoft Certification exam can do it without any barriers or hurdles and showcase your expertise for in demand job roles. I will be back in the next few months to discuss more improvements that we are making to continue to empower you on your journey to get certified and to make Microsoft Certifications the most accessible certification program in the world. Be sure to check out this new resource the next time you take a role based or specialty Microsoft Certification exam.

  • I'm not yet convinced. I slogged to get those certifications, having material to hand certainly lowers the bar for new entrants.

Microsoft Learn's initiative to allow candidates access to their platform during exams is a commendable and forward-thinking approach to certification. It promotes a more holistic learning experience, reduces exam anxiety, and encourages continuous learning. By aligning exam preparation with a comprehensive learning platform, Microsoft is not only helping individuals succeed in their certification journey but also preparing them for success in the ever-evolving tech industry.

There are many people that have TEST ANXIETY, so its not that they can't complete the questions proficiently but that test taking makes them extremely nervous.  This can HELP ease that anxiety quite a bit.

I know that recently I had the same issue start to creep up on me in where previously I had completed 23 Microsoft certifications without ANY issue.  It all started with COVID-19, when exams went virtual.  I was fine with it all until I had to renew my MS-700.  I schedule the exam, went to take it, had spoken to the exam company about my special accommodation --- I have Cystic Fibrosis and unfortunately that day I was put on IV antibiotics that I can do at home (I have a cath port).  I let them know that I had a medical device that could potentially need to be looked over if it beeps, etc.  They had told me that was okay.  But the comptroller failed me immediately when the device did in fact BEEP to tell me the medication had completed and I could disconnect.  I was LIVID about that.  I did retake it (they evaluated the situation and granted me a voucher to retake) when I was not on IV abx, passed it with 932.  But that situation then created a complete NERVOUSNESS in me I had never experienced before and every virtual test after that was a NIGHTMARE.

This really can help to ease the anxiety quite a bit.  Because for me it wasn't that I didn't KNOW the answers, it was the anxiety that caused a sort of mental fog. And you just might experience that type of situation because of anxiety and nothing else. Knowing this option is available for those situations can be a lifesaver!

vs. the AWS and GCP exams (I have gotten all the way to Pro Architect in all three), the Azure exams I have taken have definitely had more of the "select the right powerShell option" or "which SKU do you need for X feature" or "what is the order of steps for X" questions, (if I have to regurgitate the order of the steps to establish an Azure VPN ever again, it'll be too soon!) and certainly this update will help those questions feel a lot more fair...  (That said, I expect during the Pilot Testing phase of exam development for future forms, many questions like that will simply be struck from the final exam forms due to now being too easy.)

This will help a lot of people, especially when it comes to not needing to memorize different SKU's, which are easily referenced in real life with a quick search. This is more like real life experience than a glorified sales exam.

This upgrade is intended to provide a more comprehensive and interactive testing experience for candidates. With the integration of Microsoft Learn into real exams, test-takers will have immediate access to relevant learning resources and documentation, allowing them to quickly find information and confidently answer questions.
