As AI reshapes the modern workplace, business leaders and decision-makers are eager to unlock the full potential of this new technology safely and effectively; however, years of accumulated content without adequate content governance controls can stall AI deployments and business transformation.

The power of AI and built-in content governance

Effective content governance has always been crucial for maintaining the integrity, security, and relevance of organizational content. AI’s power to make content more discoverable than ever before amplifies this need. Enhancing content governance practices in this new context requires implementing both strategies and tools that streamline the content management processes, ensure data is relevant and secure while improving overall content quality.

Today we’re pleased to announce Microsoft 365 Copilot now will include SharePoint Advanced Management capabilities, delivering built-in content governance reports and controls to rapidly accelerate Copilot deployments and automate oversight at scale.

These reports and controls will deliver powerful insights to help identify and mitigate oversharing and content sprawl, which are critical for maintaining data integrity and access governance.

That are good news. In my opinion, the main reason for including the SAM add-on in the Microsoft 365 Copilot license are three facts.

    1. The SAM license add-on is required for that feature: Restrict discovery of SharePoint sites and content - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn
    2. This feature is primary for results in Microsoft 365 Copilot
    3. There are a lot of complains about "insecure data" in Copilot results from various companies (which is not Microsoft's fault, but internal permissions misconfiguration).

With the SAM add-on in Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft can now argue that the feature should be used to exclude known misconfigured sites.

  • Seth_Patton Sesha_Mani This is not clear to me, does that means the requirement to have a SAM licence for each user in the organisation do not apply anymore if we have copilot licences?

SharePoint Advanced Management is a per-user license. To use SharePoint Advanced Management, you must have a license for each user in your organization. "

Bambamtam Your understanding is correct, we'll deliver SAM capabilities to customers who are licensed for Copilot without the need for blanket coverage. For customers who are not licensed for Copilot, there is no change to the current SAM licensing guidance in regard to coverage.

wbaer So does that mean that with just one M365 Copilot license, all users can benefit from SAM?
